Animal rights group Disobedient Animals (The Rescue Service Action 9)
liberated twelve hens from Funbo-Lövsta Research Station near
Uppsala on the night of April 14. The hens lived in so called modified
cages, which prevent all types of natural behaviour. After the
liberation the hens were transported to caring homes where they will
live according to their nature. The group left a letter for the staff,
signed with each group-member’s name, criticizing the
modified cages.
-Switzerland cancelled research with the modified cages as early as the
eighties, since hens need to move freely and flap their wings. It is
unnecessary and pointless to research a system which will never be
animal friendly. The research only caters to the battery hen industry.
Since the cages violate the Animal Protection Act, we want the research
to stop, says Jasmine Waara, who participated in the action.
