Tomas Nilsson’s Story of the Action

I was probably more nervous on the days leading up to the action rather than during the event itself. I thought of two things that meant the difference between success and failure. Firstly, of course, that the owner would be asleep rather than up partying or something. Secondly, that we would at least get past the residential house without anyone waking up. And thirdly, that the key to the hen farm would still be in the lock, so we would save time and make less noise breaking the door open. As we pushed the car past the farmer’s house, it rolled very quickly and I easily got behind by twenty meters. At that distance it sounded like a small hurricane up ahead. I anxiously glanced up at the house as I was running to make sure no lights came on. And then it was the key. I waited nervously for the reaction of the person who first walked up to the door. A pleased comment reached my ears-the key was in the lock! That’s when it first felt like we would actually succeed.

The hen farm was very warm. I wore too many clothes underneath the protective garments. After just five minutes the hen house felt like being inside a sauna in the middle of the rainforest, but it was worth it in the end. We had to work fast and save time, since the quicker we could finish, the less the chances of being discovered. I was still contemplating what to say if we were caught in the act. What would happen then? Would we know what to do?

Everything worked out perfectly inside; everyone performed their duties according to plan, and I thought we all worked quickly. We were in there for an hour, though it felt like less time to me. By the time we were carrying boxes out to the car and the surroundings were still quiet, I really thought we would pull it off.

I looked in every direction as we drove off. As we passed the house and still nothing stirred, I realized we had made it.

It still took another ten or fifteen minutes before I knew for sure that we really had done it. Perhaps it was the fatigue that came over me once I relaxed, I am not sure. At any rate, we have every reason to be proud over the largest open hen rescue ever!
