The Rescue Service Svenska English

The largest to date open rescue of hens was carried out tonight by the Rescue Service.

The Rescue Service action 16 was carried out tonight, as 120 hens were rescued from Stråkander Paint and Farming Ltd. Up until tonight the hens had been locked up by Sweden’s egg industry without any possibility to a decent life. Now they have instead been brought to loving families, where they will live healthy lives. This action was, as all previous Rescue Service actions, an act of civil disobedience. The activists acted in a non-violent manner and are forthcoming with their identities. The battery hen farm where the action took place is located outside Vadstena. The activists live in Gothenburg, Norrköping, Vadstena and Stockholm.

The hens were taken from so called modified cages. Millions of hens are oppressed by the Swedish egg industry. They are tortured and killed for the sake of a product we do not need. The egg production is highly industrialized. This farm alone holds 16,000 individuals. This large scale industrialization has long ago prevented the people within the industry to see the hens as individual beings. They are instead viewed as a collection of production units whose well being is of little consideration.

"Do not support the egg industry, eggs are an unnecessary product that causes a lot of suffering!" says Alvin Lindstam from Norrköping.

When the industry and government prioritize profit above animals, when the animals are used and killed for our simple wishes, we cannot look on and accept such a huge oppression. Since the authorities time and again have shown that they take the side of capitalism, not the side of animals, we have to intervene ourselves in order to save lives and publicize the authorities’ animal protection hypocrisy.

In their new homes, the hens we rescued will live in flocks that will provide them the opportunity to create a pecking order, the ability to go outside and to be cared for by loving people. They will not be killed for the sole reason their egg laying rate has diminished, which would have been their fate in the egg industry, and they will live according to their own needs, not those of the egg industry or consumers.

"It was hard to leave behind all the hens we had no homes for, but at the same time it was a wonderful feeling knowing we saved 120 hens from the oppression of the animal industry," says Tomas Nilsson from Gothenburg.

The Rescue Service is an organization which works within the framework of civil disobedience for the sake of animals. This was, as the name implies, the sixteenth action. For more information about the Rescue Service and previous actions, please visit our website: www.raddningstjansten.org/eng/

The Rescue Service Action 16 is, in addition to Alvin and Tomas who were quoted above, also Björn-Peder Schmid from Vadstena and Majja Carlsson from Stockholm.

The activists will be handing out flyers by the Hörsals Park in Norrköping.
