Animal Rights Activists in Court

Umeå/Piteå March 30th, 2005

On April 5th, 2004 a total of 39 hens were liberated from two hen farms, Bohman’s in Jörn and Pelle and Lisa in Östersund. It was the fifteenth action from activist organisation The Rescue Service. On April 5, 2005, precisely a year after the liberation, Åsa-Maja Augustsson from Umeå and Niklas Svenlin from Piteå faced trial for the liberation in Jörn.

At the hen farm in Jörn eight hens were liberated and immediately placed in new homes where they will have the possibility to move freely, scratch the soil and act in a manner natural to hens. To them the difference is enormous. At the hen farm they were tightly packed eight to each cage not much bigger than an open tabloid, with lights on around the clock and the temperature set to an optimal level for egg production. To the hens this translates to a lifelong stay in the torture chamber.

Sweden outlawed the traditional caging of hens in 1988. In order to hold on to the industry’s most profitable method, so called modified cages were introduced instead. They named the new cages "Comfort Cages", which are in reality only a comfort to the farm owners. The hens are still crammed eight or ten on a space not much larger than an opened tabloid newspaper.

"Inside the hen farms, usually a large hangar-like building without windows, the cages are stacked in long rows with several hundred cages to each row. To claim that this environment—’enriched’ with perching stick, nest area and sand—would be in accordance with the Swedish Animal Protection Act is ridiculous, says Niklas Svenlin.

"We do not regret our action. Not for a second. For Bohman’s Hen Farm Ltd. it meant a loss of 560SEK but the gain for the eight hens cannot be measured in money. It was terrible to have to leave behind the thousands of hens we had no homes for. No sentient individual should have to spend their lives inside a torture chamber," says Åsa-Maja Augustsson.

The trial against Åsa-Maja Augustsson and Niklas Svenlin will be held at Skellefteå district court, courtroom one, on April 5th, 2005 at eleven a.m.
